It is quick to make and easy enough for the kids to help, especially stringing it together. This DIY Valentines Day garland looks cute hung on the wall, over a mantel, or on the door. It is a great way to add cheer and festivity for a special occasion. This felt heart garland can be used year after year to add a loving touch to special occasions.

DIY Valentines Day Heart Garland Tutorial

Heart garlands are decorative arrangements of heart-shaped elements often used for a romantic occasion like Valentine’s Day, weddings, or other celebrations. They can be made from materials like paper, fabric, or even felt. This heart garland is made from felt for an elegant look. It holds up well so it can be used as party decoration again and again over the years.

DIY Valentine Heart Garland Craft Supplies:

  • 2 pieces of felt – you’ll want a thicker felt, but not too stiff, in 2 colors like red and white
  • pom poms (AKA small plush craft pompoms)
  • needle and thread (I used white thread)
  • sewing machine & thread
  • scissors

I used a sewing machine to create long lasting stitches but if you are looking for a no-sew version, you could use a hot glue gun to create the seam. You’ll love the stylish detail and heart pattern of this DIY garland.

How To Make A Felt Heart Garland:

Select the colors of felt that you want to use for your garland. For this heart garland, I suggest various shades of red, pink, or white. Begin your felt Valentine garland by cutting the felt in half lengthwise.

Using a sewing machine sew the two pieces of like color felt together lengthwise.  My felt was glittery on one side.  If your felt is like mine or has an obvious front side, sew the front sides facing in.

Carefully open the two pieces of felt and bring the open edges to meet each other creating the heart shape.  Sew the felt together approximately 1/4″ from the edge.

You should have a heart shaped tube.  Carefully cut the tube into slices that will each form an individual heart. For my Valentines Day garland I wanted the felt hearts to be about 1″ thick.  Each piece of felt should make about 10-12 hearts.

Repeat with the other color of felt.

Next begin stringing the felt hearts onto a piece of thread using a needle. I added a small red pom pom in between each heart and alternated colors.

Continue threading the hearts and pom-poms on until your felt Valentine garland is the length you need. Leave a little extra string on each side to you can tie a loop and pin it up.

Once you’ve completed this wonderful fabric heart garland, you can hang it on a wall, mantel, or use it as a decorative element for parties and events.
