Homemade Carpet Deodorizer Powder

DIY Carpet Deodorizer Ingredients & Supplies Needed:

  • Baking Soda (AKA sodium bicarbonate)
  • An essential oil of your choice (If you are in need of essential oils, I am a distributor. Please visit my link here to get started with Young Living!)
  • A mason jar with a sprinkle top (affiliate amazon link here)

How To Make Carpet Deodorizer:

To make your homemade carpet cleaner deodorizer, gather your all natural ingredients/supplies and lay everything out on your kitchen counter. It is nice knowing exactly what is in your cleaning products and that it is ideal environmentally friendly solution. Baking soda is non-toxic and safe to use on a variety of surfaces, including carpets, without causing damage. It works by neutralizing acidic odors, which are often the cause of unpleasant smells. There are so many terrific uses of baking soda for cleaning around the house and eliminating the need for harsh chemicals.

Start by filling the mason jar half way up with your main ingredient, baking soda. If you use a pint size mason jar, that will be 1 cup of baking soda. Grab your Young Living essential oil and add 5 drops on top of the baking soda. We like Purification oil best for this purpose. It does a wonderful job at absorbing odors and leaving a fresh scent behind. Lavender essential oil is another go to favorite and Christmas Spirit is just right for the fall and winter seasons.Other great essential oils to try: Orange, Thieves or Citrus Fresh. In this way, you will not just be deodorizing you will also be making your carpet smell good. This is particularly helpful if you have pet odor that you are trying to combat on a regular basis.

After you have added your essential oil drops, fill the rest of your jar up with baking soda (another cup), stopping where the jar starts to get skinny again leaving some room for shaking. Add 5 more drops of your essential oil. Screw the sprinkle top on (if you don’t have a sprinkle top, you can use a regular mason jar lid and carefully punch holes in the top). I just place my hand over the sprinkle top but you could cover it with a paper towel before screwing on the lid if you would prefer and then give it a good shake. Make sure to gently shake over the sink in case any powder falls out. After shaking, let sit for 10 minutes. Letting your DIY carpet deodorizer mixture sit for a few minutes will allow the baking soda to soak up the essential oil and distribute more evenly.

How To Deodorize Carpet

To deodorize carpet, you can one of two methods depending on the level of odor. Before using on your whole carpet, it’s a good idea to test your natural deodorizer in an inconspicuous area of the carpet to ensure it doesn’t cause any damage or discoloration.

When you are ready to use your carpet deodorizer, sprinkle the baking soda mixture liberally over the carpet. A full mason jar will approximately cover an 18×18 foot room. If this is part of your weekly carpet freshener clean to get rid of doggy smells, let it sit for 10 minutes and then vacuum. If this part of a deep clean for bad odors that have been trapped a long time, let it sit for several hours or even overnight to absorb odors. After the baking soda has had time to work, vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove the baking soda and the odors it has absorbed. After you have vacuumed, the scent of your essential oil will linger for awhile leaving a fresh, pleasant scent!

If the odor persists, consider hiring a professional carpet cleaning service. They have the equipment and expertise to thoroughly clean and deodorize carpets.

Benefits of Deodorizing Powder For Carpets

Deodorizing a carpet in this way should be done regularly for several reasons:

  1. Remove Dirt and Debris: Carpets can trap dirt, dust, and other debris deep in their fibers. Regular cleaning helps remove these particles, improving the overall cleanliness of your home.
  2. Improve Air Quality: Dirty carpets can harbor allergens and bacteria, which can affect indoor air quality. Regular cleaning helps remove these contaminants, promoting a healthier environment.
  3. Extend Carpet Life: Dirt and debris can damage carpet fibers over time, leading to premature wear and tear. Regular cleaning helps extend the life of your carpet by removing these damaging particles.
  4. Remove Odors: Carpets can trap odors from pets, food, and other sources. Regular cleaning helps remove these odors, keeping your home smelling fresh.
  5. Maintain Appearance: Regular cleaning helps maintain the appearance of your carpet, keeping it looking clean and inviting.

Overall, regular carpet cleaning and deodorizing is essential for maintaining a clean, healthy, and attractive home.
